Are Canadian politicians doing what they appear to be doing?

Canadian politicians, acting in a formal capacity as representatives of their government, often participate in events that acknowledge Canada's Vietnamese community in terms that contain partisan references to the Vietnam war.

Such references are ill-conceived and, in light of parliamentary bill S-219, express outright hostility toward most Vietnamese Canadians.
These partisan references are routinely included in things such as flag raisings, dedications of public spaces, memorials, statements in parliament, press releases, and web site postings.
Partisan references to the Vietnam war are political in nature and should only be directed to partisan political groups, not to an entire ethnic community. This is responsible behaviour for dealing with any of Canada's ethnic communities, not specific to Vietnamese people.
This series of articles inventories all recent events that we are aware of. Our intent is to show that this is a consistent pattern, not an occasional occurrence.
