Expand/contract widgets
Most articles consist of 5 parts: highlights, the body, footnotes, references, and additional reading.
The bulk of the text is in the body, and that is usually subdivided into topics. When the page first opens, you will only see the topic headings. That is so that you can scan the body for something that interests you, without having to plough trough all of it.
When you see the plus sign symbol beside a heading it means that you can click or touch the heading to reveal the text related to the heading.
Citations and references [212]
The green superscripted numbers in the text beside a citation or in-line reference refer to the Bibliographic data base. Click on the number to see more information in a popup box.
If there are citations or references in the article, there will be a consolidated, sorted list of them in the 'Bibliographies" section at the bottom of the page.
Fact Checks
A large part of our web site is about historical revisionism and we often quote information that is not factual. Such quotes are often marked with the fact check flashlight icon. If you click or touch the icon you will get just a short popup reminder that you can look up the true facts somewhere else on the web site.
Footnotes [1]
The blue superscripted numbers are references to the footnotes at the bottom of the page. Footnotes usually contain explanations and references to other articles on the web site. More information pops up when you click or touch the superscript.
All of the footnotes appear in a section near the bottom of the page.
Images (charts and photographs)
Images on pages appear either as a reduced size thumbnail or as a camera icon. Click on the thumbnail or camera icon to see an enlarged image along with some information describing it and an link to the bibliography item that explains where it came from.
Hints
'The explanation you need.'
In many places, particularly in the bibliography pages, an explanation of something on the page can be made to pop up by clicking the question mark
Breadcrumbs
Use the 'breadcrumbs' near the top of the page to navigate back to pages from which you followed links. If you use the browser's 'back' button it may corrupt the breadcrumb and it will no longer be useful.
Glossary
The words or phrases with green dotted underlines are defined in our glossary. Click or touch the term to see the definition in a popup box.. There is a lot of information in the glossary -- you can view it all through the Glossary link in the page menu.
Here is an example: chauvinistic
Cross referencing
Near the bottom of the page are two links: indexed subjects and bibliographies. Clicking on one of the listed items will give you a list of related articles for that topic.
Pop-ups
Several of the above items make use of popup boxes to reveal additional information. These boxes can be moved around the page by dragging the top bar. The boxes can be resized vertically by dragging the bottom bar.
