Notes: A good story about the Hai Hong incident. It concentrates on the operational aspects of the incident and only summarizes the political motivations that were behind it. It has a positive tone, which distinguishes it from the typical revisionist stories about the refugees. One of the important things we learn from this item is the selection criteria that were used for qualifying refugees for admission to Canada. High priority was given to people who already had connections to Canada, and effort were made to keep entire extended families together. Pappone later wrote a revisionist article in 2019. See related items. Pappone also re-issued this book in 2015. That version is pretty much the same as this 1982 version except for a few paragraphs added at the end that may have been intended to satisfy the revisionists, but are more confusing than anything. The 2015 version is available on Kindle -- just ignore everything after the first half of the last chapter. |
